Professions { 18 images } Created 2 Nov 2014

An old boss once told me, “You are what you do.” This I believe to be true, as we spend thousands of hours each year working to provide for ourselves and our families. The Professions series is meant to capture the story of a person’s livelihood, and in effect, who they are, in a single image.

While traditional portraits focus on a subject’s face, I believe it is a person’s surroundings, their environment, which conveys the narrative of their place on this planet. As such, the Professions series specifically focuses away from the face to direct our attention to the way in which others make their living on a day-to-day basis.

  • Brick Breaker - Chittagong, Bangladesh - Chards of brick spray with each pounding blow of the hammer, the tragic irony being the requirement to demolish each to dust before the second life of the building blocks is realized.

  • Oarsman - Volta River, Ghana - He rests the paddle as his muscles relax, their first break in hours of effortless gliding that appears smooth but for the tension in his toned biceps.

  • Lettuce Farmer - Kumasi, Ghana - Droplets cascade from the long neck of the watering can onto the rows of crops in the fertile soil, pelting the young green leaves that bend under the blows but bounce back, thirsty for more.

  • Obino Simwaba holds his and my shoes, as we walk through the low flowing Zambezi River, at the lip of Victoria Falls in Zambia. Obino gives tours and helps ensure his guests get to see the falls in safety. He held my hand as we crossed the multiple slippery shallow waterways as we made our way across to Angel's Pool.

  • Fisherman - Chittagong, Bangladesh - The water at the docks recedes as the sun rises, forcing the fishermen to abandon their seaworthy vessels and thrust the wooden hulls through the mud of low tide before unloading that evenings catch.

  • The feet and tools of Mr Paul Mwimba, a worker at a coral quarry outside of Lamu Island, Kenya. His bare feet are covered in coral dust, and lie completely unprotected as he uses the axes and tools around his feet to unearth the coral bricks.
